"Land and Sea" Shaw WiFi
Hotspot.
The Algoma Sailing Club has partnered with Shaw
Cable Internet to help provide an outdoor public use "Land and Sea" Shaw WiFi
Internet Hotspot.
This
partnership allows for internet access for both the General Public and for the
Algoma Sailing Club Members at the clubhouse and onboard their sailboats.
Having a Shaw WiFi hotspot located at the clubhouse for Belleview Park area
helps to also provide a means for internet access for various community groups
to allow them to broadcast their events live while at the park.
The Algoma Sailing Club will house and power the WiFi equipment which is owned
and maintained by Shaw Cable. There are two WiFi Mesh Units are located on top
the clubhouse with one pointing West towards the Park and the other pointing
South towards TopSail Island. The Wifi Mesh units work somewhat like a cell
phone network that as long as you are in range they automatically transfer your
session to the next unit when you travel or move.
Folks can relax on picnic tables throughout the
park, and or on their boats while surfing the internet. The actual distance and
coverage depends on your equipment used (note: some laptops models transmit a
stronger signal than others) and the amount of trees full of leaves
that can reduce the overall signal strength.
Clubhouse disclaimer: When one is connected to
any type of a WiFI network, there is a possibly that your sensitive information
could be obtained, hence ensure that you have proper security software
installed, sharing of files/folders turned off, and use of a firewall on your
wifi internet connection.
