Trans Superior International Yacht Race 2011 – The challenge continues

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - Saturday, August 6th, 2011 will mark the start of the 22nd biennial running of the Trans Superior International Yacht Race.

The 326 nautical mile race from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Duluth, Minnesota is organized by the Duluth Yacht Club in conjunction with the Algoma Sailing Club in Sault Ste. Marie.

To date twenty-eight crewed and single-handed boats are registered for this years Trans Superior International Yacht Race.

And once again this year The Great Lakes Single Handed Society sanctions the Trans Superior Solo Challenge division, possibly the most demanding race on the Great Lakes annual yacht race events calendar.

As of this date four Canadian boats are registered including Steele N Time out of Goulais River Ontario in the Cruising Division, and Straight Jacket, Mongoose and Northern Harrier from Thunder Bay, Ontario in the PHRF racing division.

The Trans Superior has been held every odd year since 1969.

This event is part of the Lake Superior Yachting Association off-shore series and the longest point to point fresh water race held biennially on the Great Lakes.

The race was first organized by Duluth sailor Jack Soetebier and Dr. John Pierpoint from White Pine, Michigan.

The two men set up the race as a challenge to themselves and other Lake Superior sailors.

Boats from around the Great Lakes begin arriving at the Bondar Marina on August 3rd.

Race festivities will begin with a luncheon followed by the skipper’s meeting on August 5th under the Bondar Festival Tent in Sault Ste. Marie, and end with an awards dinner at the historic Kitchi Gammi Club in downtown Duluth on Thursday, August 11th

For Sault Ste. Marie and area residents this is an opportunity to see close-up some of the top rated racing yachts on the Great Lakes, and view their passage through the historic Canadian Locks on way to the race start line off Pointe Louise on the morning of August 6th.

Trans Superior Race apparel will be available for sale at the Bondar Marina office from August 3 through 5.
