Cadets Sail Away
By
Lieutenant (Navy) Robert Pihlaja
For nine days this August, thirteen members of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet
Corps "Royal Sovereign" have been working hard to develop their
sailing skills in Sault Ste. Marie.
Two instructors from the Regional Cadet Sailing School (Central) located at HMCS
Ontario in Kingston, Ontario arrived with a trailer of six sailboats for the
local cadets to use during their instruction.
The Algoma Sailing Club allowed the sea cadets and the sailing school to utilize
their facility for the entire nine days.
For a few sea cadets, this is their first time sailing a dinghy. For
others, it has been a chance to fine-tune their sailing skills in preparation
for next month's Northern Ontario Regatta.
The top two teams will advance to the Provincial Regatta next June.
The top six teams will then advance to the National Regatta next August.
The cadets can also qualify for Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) White Sail
levels which are required for their promotion to Petty Officer First Class.
All of this is provided at no cost to the cadets.
The weather has been fantastic and the cadets' smiles have been huge! This adds
up to a picture-perfect opportunity to highlight the local sea cadet corps and
the Algoma Sailing Club.
